Fraunhofer ISE has demonstrated a thicker-electrode architecture that allows a battery of the same weight to store between 10% and 15% more energy. The solution reduces the share taken up by inactive components and was tested in pouch cells produced using processes close to those used by industry.
The principle has been applied to lithium, zinc and sodium chemistries, which broadens its potential. The work is still at the development and validation stage, but it could help future storage systems offer greater range without increasing mass.
