EPFL researchers have discovered that certain bacteria can sense when they bump into others and respond by changing direction within seconds. This simple mechanism helps the group avoid congestion and allows some cells to move away and explore new spaces.
The team combined live microscopy, single-cell tracking, simulations and small mazes. The discovery reveals a new form of navigation based on physical contact rather than chemical signals, and could help us better understand how microbial communities move.
