A study carried out by SINTEF on the Tromsø Bridge showed that LED signs projected directly onto the ground can help pedestrians and cyclists choose the correct lane. The research analysed 28,432 crossings and compared the usual signage with three illuminated solutions.
The option with blue symbols for pedestrians and cyclists performed best: the share of people choosing correctly rose from 61.5% to 83.4%. The researchers stress that the technology should complement, not replace, official signs.
