A video of a ride-hailing driver in Chengdu, Sichuan province, reassuring a blind passenger has gone viral on mainland Chinese social media. The driver, surnamed Wang, picked up the passenger, surnamed Ou, after the platform flagged the booking as an accessible service request, and helped him into the car.
Wang later explained that bookings by passengers registered with a disability certificate are automatically marked as accessible service requests rather than being assigned to specific drivers. During the journey, Ou asked whether he had hesitated to take the booking on learning that he was blind.
When Ou described his own eyes as “ugly”, Wang assured him that he was not ugly. The two became friends, and the driver pledged to take him free of charge, whenever he needs it, between Chengdu and his hometown, more than 200km away.
