Researchers from NOVA FCT and the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon have shown that deep porous rock formations can store large amounts of renewable energy using compressed air.
The study estimates that suitable geological reservoirs could reach capacities of around 1 TWh, enough to supply hundreds of thousands of homes. Surplus electricity compresses atmospheric air, which is stored in the rocks and later released to drive turbines when the grid needs power.
